Taxonomy

Sarawak, Long Pala. The male holotype of Siculodes glareola, Felder, Felder & Rogenhofer, 1874, pl.134, fig. 11 from Java, is in the NHM (Mi7305) genitalia slide #13506.

Description

29mm. This species is difficult to distinguish from A. decussata and A.ferocia. A pink-brown species with a uniformly reticulated wing pattern picked out by darker brown speckles, some of which may be enlarged to small rectangular spots. The FW has two conjoined small dark patches in the orbicular area and there is a small dark patch near the middle of the HW in many specimens.In addition to the nominate subspecies, two further unnamed sspp. are recorded: Ssp. glareola Felder, Felder & Rogenhofer, 1874, Sumatra, Java, Bali. Ssp. 1 unnamed; Myanmar, W. Malaysia, Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei, very closely resembles A. decussata. Ssp. 2 unnamed; Assam.

Distribution & Habitat

Assam, Myanmar, Sumatra, W. Malaysia, Sarawak, Sabah, Brunei, Kalimantan Barat & Selatan, Java, Bali. Lowland to hill primary & secondary forest, tea plantations; <600m.

Life History & Pest Status

A specimen at GTE seen flying by day by HSB. A minor pest species, reported as feeding on Camellia sinensis (Theaceae), tea and Cinnamomum zeylanicum (Lauraceae), cinnamon (HOSTS [Accessed Nov. 2008]).

Similar spp.

There appears to be no spotting of the abdomen in some specimens, unlike A. decussata. Whalley (1976:107) noted there was some variation in the genitalia of specimens from Java and Malaya but these have not been separated into sspp.
