Genus Collinsa Whalley, 1964

Type Species: roseopuncta (Warren 1902:342) (Dohertya) by original designation, is from Sulawesi (Bontain [Bonthain]). Repl. n. for Dohertya Warren (1902). Junior homonym. nec Dohertya Hampson (1894:63) [Arctiidae: Lithosiinae] Whalley (1964:118).

Generic description: The labial palps are long and three segmented. A proboscis is present. Eyes without interfacetal hairs. The antennae are minutely ciliate. The radial veins arise from the FW cell. The fore tibiae have epiphyses. The tarsi are without spines and the hind tibiae have a distal pair of spurs. The males have an uncus that is usually broad at the base and the lobes of the juxta have median spines. Female with prominent spiny signum in bursa. The African species are characterised by having reduced spurs on the the hind tibiae and a single prominent, usually slightly clavate, median spur (Whalley, 1971a:139-140).

Collinsa has at least 25 small to medium sized species mostly in Asia. In SE Asia several unnamed species resembling C. acutalis (Walker) and C. commanotata (Warren). This group of species is usually a light reddish brown with an overall reticulate pattern in darker brown and there is usually a slightly darker median fascia. The FW typically has a small white c-shaped apical spot. Although these species are less distinctly marked, in another group nr. C. decoratalis a few species are richly mottled in orange and dark brown or with dark brown fasciation. There also appears to be a considerable range of undescribed morphotypes associated with the pattern group that resembles C. sphoraria (Swinhoe, 1892). The group shows a diversity of wing patterns and shapes and several species were transferred, possibly erroneously, to Hypolamprus. A generic revision of Collinsa and Hypolamprus is urgently needed.
