Genus Hypolamprus  Hampson, [1893] 1892

Type species: striatalis (Swinhoe 1886:875) (Microsca), by original designation, is from Bombay.

Generic description: Palpi slight and porrect, upturned reaching above the vertex of the head. The antennae are minutely ciliated in the males. Neuration similar to Rhodoneura except veins 8 & 9 [R3 & R4] of the FW are stalked (Hampson [1893] 1892:352 (key), 364).

Hampson’s original generic description, summarised above, does not provide particularly distinctive features (although he does describe the wing venation). The publication of a new definition based on genitalic and other characteristics would be useful in resolving the confusion of morphotypes included in this genus.

Hypolamprus has c.35 small species in SE Asia. They have a wide variety of different wing patterns, and it is probably not a natural group. Several species have been transferred here from Collinsa and many of the undescribed morphotypes illustrated here may need to be placed elsewhere. The pattern group Hypolamprus spp. 4, 5, 16, 17 & 18, associated with H. emblicalis (Moore, [1888] 1887), H. ornata (van Eecke, 1929), & H. vinosata Warren, 1908 needs close attention.
