Taxonomy

Moluccas, Amboina. Same specimen as figured in RTS. The holotype of Rhodoneura canidentalis Swinhoe, 1906:381 is from India (Meghalaya, Khasia Hills). Comb. n. to Microbelia (RTS:132-133).

Description

18mm. This is a brown mottled species with indistinct reticulation. It has darker, broad, median and sub-marginal fasciae on the HW and a series of triangular marks of various sizes on the FW costa. Note that the shape of the HW is rather variable. At the extreme, some specimens are marked with extensive dark blotching which obscures any banding. In addition to the nominate ssp. from Assam it appears to have several unnamed sspp: Ssp. 1 unnamed from Sri Lanka, India, (Maharashtra, Karnataka). Ssp. 2 unnamed from W. Malaysia, Singapore, Sabah, Kalimantan Selatan, Java. Ssp. 3 unnamed from Taiwan, Hong Kong). Ssp. 4 unnamed from Moluccas.

Distribution & Habitat

Taiwan, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Assam, W. Malaysia, Singapore, Kalimantan Selatan, Java, Timor, Ambon, Moluccas. Lowland forest; <600m.

Life History & Pest Status

Feeds on Bischofia javanica and Antidesma bunius (Euphorbiaceae) (Chinese laurel); Viburnum odoratissimum (Caprifoliaceae).
