Taxonomy

W. Malaysia, GTE. The holotype of Pharambara splendida Butler, 1887:117 is from Solomon Is. (Alu [Islands]). Comb. rev. to Pharambara (Shaffer & Nielsen, 1996). Syn. Brixia dialitha Tams, 1935:245, pl. xi. TL Samoa (Pago Pago, Tutuila), is in the NHM (Mi7369). Syn. n. (Shaffer & Nielsen, 1996). Syn. Hypolamprus lineatellus van Eecke, 1929: 110. TL Sumatra, is in the NHM. Syn. n. (Shaffer & Nielsen 1996). Syn. Rhodoneura rhaphiducha Turner, 1911:106. The type from Queensland (Kuranda), is in the ANIC Canberra. Syn. n. (Shaffer & Nielsen 1996). Syn. Pharambara parcipunctalis Warren, 1896a:210. TL India (Meghalaya), is in the NHM (Mi7369) (Lepindex).

Description

18-32mm. A red-brown coarsely reticulated species with vestiges of paler spotting. A few specimens are small. The dark markings on the RTS figured specimen from Sabah (Mt. Kinabalu) appear to have slightly more contrast than in most specimens. The Un and Up markings are very similar. Note the distinctive elongate dark spot near the FW apex and the square spot on the hind margin of the FW. Note the slightly scalloped HW.

Distribution & Habitat

Sri Lanka, Meghalaya, Andaman Is., Taiwan, Thailand, Sumatra, W. Malaysia, Sabah, Sarawak, Java, Sulawesi, Moluccas, Bali, West Papua, PNG, Philippines, Australia (Q), Solomon Is., Samoa, Hawaii. Lowland to upper montane forest; <1670m.

Life History & Pest Status

The larva feeds on Macaranga aleuritoides, M. brachytricha, M. glaberrima, M. tsonane, M. quadriglandulosa, & M. tanarius (Euphorbiaceae)(CATS [Accessed Sept. 2008], HOSTS [Accessed Oct. 2008]).

This species resembles some other unnamed morphotypes grouped under Collinsa in the NHM. See also the similar Picrostomastis inductalis.
