Gargela renatusalis Walker, [1859]; PED 5

  • Taxonomy

The holotype of Zabronia renatusalis Walker, 1859: 484, is from Sarawak and is in the U.M. Oxford.
Angonia crambidalis Snellen, 1893 TL Java is closely related and was considered syn. by Hampson (1895) but Shaffer (1979) MS sp. rev. (LepIndex) considered it a good sp.

  • Description

Wing length: 6mm. Most Gargela species are undescribed. The NHM has a long series of superficially similar specimens with a range from circum Bengal to China and Australasia. Most species have unique FW patterns within a broadly similar pattern scheme. The mainly white FW generally have dark angled median and postmedian lines and the veins are often picked out with bright yellow. The HWs are usually pearly white. In renatusalis the median fascia enlarges as a small triangular patch on the FW rear margin. There is a prominent dark triangular patch on the FW base and a black submarginal spot terminally. (See RTS, 1994).
    G. crambidalis (Snellen 1893: 56, pl. 3, fig. 1), from Java and Bali is similar but there is no dark blotch on the basal angle of the FW and there is a prominent triangular mark at the distal end of the postmedian line. It has a partial submarginal FW line composed of three black interneural spots near the apex.
